Sir Thomas Rich’s School in Gloucester wanted to breathe new life into their large main hall by replacing their outdated, 25-year-old sound and lighting system. The existing setup—featuring old theatre lights, worn 15A sockets, and tired hi-fi speakers—was no longer up to the task. With ambitions to host full-scale concerts, theatre productions, and encourage student bands, the school needed a complete, modern upgrade that could meet every creative demand.
A State-of-the-Art Sound System
The hall, an impressive space measuring approximately 20m wide by 25m long, was equipped with a powerful new Martin Audio sound system. A pair of Martin Audio CDD full-range speakers were installed either side of the stage, perfectly complemented by Martin Audio XP118 sub-bass speakers positioned below for rich, deep low-end sound.
To ensure crystal-clear audio throughout the room, a pair of Martin Audio CDD10 compact speakers were suspended halfway down the hall from the lighting bars and time-aligned with the main system for seamless coverage. All speakers are driven by Powersoft Quattrocanali amplifiers, delivering exceptional clarity, reliability, and headroom.
For performances, the system includes a full suite of Shure vocal and instrument microphones, complete with stands, cables, and DI boxes, plus four Martin Audio X12 stage monitors—giving bands the professional setup they need to shine. Everything is managed through an Allen & Heath SQ6 digital mixer, networked via digital stage boxes for ultimate flexibility and control.
Dynamic Lighting Upgrade
The lighting system was completely overhauled to match the hall’s new audio capabilities. All legacy 15A sockets were upgraded to PowerCON connectors, and new switch packs replaced outdated dimmers to provide “hot power” for modern LED fixtures. A 4-way Datastream DMX splitter and a full DMX distribution system were installed across the stage and lighting bars, ensuring robust and reliable control.
The new lighting rig features a versatile mix of Chauvet LED Ovation F915 Variable Zoom Fresnels, EVE P160 wash lights, and Intimidator spot moving head fixtures—perfect for everything from drama performances to live gigs. Control comes via a Chamsys QuickQ 30 lighting console, renowned for its intuitive interface and powerful programming capabilities. With a built-in router, staff can easily control or edit lighting scenes from a tablet or phone—ideal for non-technical users running rehearsals or smaller events.
A Venue Transformed
The result is a stunning transformation. The school’s main hall is now a vibrant, professional-grade performance space, fully equipped for concerts, theatre productions, assemblies, and more. Beyond school use, the venue has become a valuable community asset, regularly hired by local theatre groups and performers.
Sir Thomas Rich’s School now boasts a hall that looks and sounds as impressive as the talent it showcases.
