John Kyle High school in Ross On Wye has a large main hall and stage that had been fitted out with broad range of generic wash and spot lights over 30 years ago running off 24 channels of dimming all of which were coming to the end of their life. The sound system was also very tired and with old speakers located in various positions they were struggling to get a coherent sound and the mishmash of equipment in the rack made it difficult for staff to understand and operate it.
The school decided they to wanted to totally upgrade both the lighting and sound with all LED wash and profile lighting and a new higher quality sound system with 16 channels of radio mics to transform all of their shows.
Lighting
In the main hall we installed new pre-wired lighting bars c/w powercon sockets and also replaced all the existing stage bar sockets with powercon ones. The old dimmers were removed and a new fuse board was fitted to deliver the correct power to all the bars. Over the stage we fitted Chauvet EVE160 colour changing wash lights whilst on the two hall bars we fitted Chauvet EVE100 profile spots, EVE100 warm white fixtures along with 4 x Chauvet high powered zoomable colour wash fresnels. On the back bar we fitted Chauvet Intimidator Spot 375 Moving head fixtures that can either do colour spot or wash effects. To control all of these lights we supplied a Chamsys QuickQ 20 lighting desk which the technical team quickly got to grips with and were immediately creating wonderful lighting scenes.
Amazing Sound System
Just like the lighting all the old speakers and amplifiers were removed and a new 48u rack was installed to house the 16 x Audio Technica headworn radio mics along with all the aerial distribution, amplifiers, blue tooth receiver and Allen & Heath AR2412 stage box. For day to day use we installed a simple Cloud Electronics 6 channel rack mount mixer where two of the radio mics, laptop audio and blue tooth receiver were patched allowing daily assemblies and presentations to be easily put through the sound system. When the school wish to put on music and theatre productions we provided an Allen & Heath SQ7 Digital Mixer which like the Cloud mixer is connected to an audio switcher in the rack which the school can use to switch between the mixer they wish to use. Either side of the stage we fitted a pair of Martin Audio Q12B full range speakers and Q118B Sub Bass speakers and then half way down the hall we fitted another pair of Q12’s. The Q12’s were powered by an Audac 4 channel amp which allowed us to both EQ and time align them whilst we used a Yamaha PX8 amplifier for the sub bass speakers.
The installation has been a great success and transformed the level and quality of productions the school can now stage. They staff and pupils are all really enjoying the fantastic light shows they can do and the detailed, clear sound of the performances.
